Giving FAQs

GIVING FAQs:

HOW MUCH DO I GIVE?

Many times we tend to look at the size of the gift or the goodness of the cause. But Jesus measured generosity by a different standard: the condition of the giver’s heart. The biblical model is the first 10 percent of your income, which was modeled for us in the Old Testament.  Beyond tithe, one may give offerings for the proclamation of His gospel and the support and growth of His church.

Key things to do before giving:

Remember everything you have belongs to God—the act of giving is simply offering back to God what is already His.
Through prayer, ask God for direction.
Be a cheerful giver!

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GIVE?

Discover Life offers many ways to give so that you can choose the way that is best for you.

 Ways to Give.

CAN I DESIGNATE MY GIVING TO A SPECIFIC MINISTRY OR FUND?

Yes, you can designate your gift to a specific ministry or fund. When you designate your gift as tithe it supports local pastors and teachers and the worldwide work of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. When you designate it as church budget it supports what we do locally. Almost all ministries and activities are funded through our church budget. The church staff and church board carefully consider how our funds will be distributed among our ministries in a way that keeps our mission and most important our values at the forefront.

May I donate items such as property, vehicles or other VALUABLE items?

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE ADVANTAGES OF A STOCK DONATION?

Gifts of appropriate property (i.e., stocks, bonds and mutual funds) that have increased in value since you have owned them can result in extra tax savings, which allows your money to go further for ministry. If you have held such assets for longer than a year, you can give them to Discover Life Seventh-day Adventist church and deduct the entire market value from your taxable income. In addition to regular tax savings, capital gains tax is not due on assets given to charity.

If the stock has depreciated in value from its base purchase value, the best step is to sell it, deduct the loss on your taxes and make a tax-deductible, charitable donation of the proceeds.

WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY GIVING STATEMENT?

Everyone who gives to Discover Life Seventh-day Adventist Church will receive a giving statement in January for the previous calendar year. If you give online, you can login and view your giving history anytime.
