Hi,

Happy Friday! I hope your week has gone well and that you have a meaningful Sabbath planned. We have several online groups you can join. I've loved attending my online Sabbath school. The links to our worship service are below as well.

I wish I could tell you that we have a firm date for reopening. Unfortunately, we still don't have word from our county government or the Conference. As soon as we know something, I'll tell you.

Be Well!

Pastor Nathan

Hi,

It is nice to see our community beginning to open up a little bit. I'm hopeful that we will be safe and healthy and continue to be spared the tremendous suffering that so many have endured.

I don't know about you, but I'm excited to be able to worship together in person! The Covid-19 virus has taught me this just how much I appreciate seeing everyone as we worship on the Sabbath.

As I talk to people, almost everyone asks when we will be able to go back to in-person worship. I wish I had an answer, but at this time I can only tell you that I don't know. The state of California only permits large gatherings in stage four of the reopening process, so I don't expect that we will be meeting in person for quite some time.

In the meantime, I am working closely with the Conference office to ensure that when we are permitted to worship together that we have implemented health and safety protocols to protect our congregation.

Please know that your pastors and elders are praying for you, and if you need anything, please reach out and let us know.

Be Well!

Pastor Nathan

Hi,
I hope your week has been wonderful and that you have a restful and joyful Sabbath. I don't know about you but I can't wait to worship together. Unfortunately, we don't yet have an update on when we can meet together. Hopefully soon!

Has God done anything special in your life that you would like to share? We would love to have you record a short video testimony that we could incorporate into our worship service. Keep us posted about what God is doing!

All the best!

4/29/2020

Hi,

How have you been spending your time during the shelter at home order? I'm shocked at how much time I save by not driving, grocery shopping less, and not having to leave the house to go to meetings. I've used this new time to draw closer to Jesus through prayerful study and reflection on God's word and magnificent character. I consider this a good gift during a painful time.

I've also been making sure to take long walks as often as I can. In fact, if you happen to call me (209-768-9507), I will most likely put my headphones on and go for a walk. It is almost impossible for me to sit and talk on the phone. I've also been trying to eat as healthy as I can. I've been baking some fantastic wheat-free bread (I have a severe allergy to wheat). This bread is so much better than store-bought bread, but it is still gluten-free, so it takes some getting used to.

I hope you've been ministered to by the online worship services and Sabbath Schools. I've loved attending an online Sabbath School. The class I attend is filled with amazing and inspiring Christians. I feel honored to learn from their experience with Christ.

The incredible work of the musicians has also inspired me. I am amazed that each person can record their part at home and that Ryan Moore can put it all together in a video. I'm impressed that everyone has been so able and ready to transition to an online ministry.

I want to end with a serious question. What can we do better? I'm praying for you, and I want to support you in any way possible. Let me know if there is anything we could be doing better. I'm genuinely open to your feedback. I've devoted my life to serve God's people and to expand his kingdom. Right now, I feel like I'm flying a little blind. Please let me know how I can serve you more fully during this time.

All the best!
Pastor Nathan

Hi,

Are you ready to hear something that is not Covid-19 related? I sure am. The book of Job describes the ostrich as an unwise and unattractive bird. It neglects its eggs and is generally unintelligent. However, when she runs, she "laughs at the horse and rider" as they eat her dust (Job 39:18). Wow! I love it! The ostrich isn't pretty or wise, but she can run. The lesson I took from this is, you don't need to be what you're not. Just be what you are. Each of us has been built by God with our unique gifts and calling. Be what he made you to be and do what he made you to do.

Courage!

Pastor Nathan

Hi,

Do you need some hope? A Bible prophecy series title Hope Awakens begins this Friday night. The speaker is John Bradshaw. He has an engaging way of presenting that puts Jesus in the hopeful center of Bible prophecy. I'm planning on watching every meeting over the next several weeks. If you are interested, you can find out more at HopeAwakens.com. Share the link on social media.

Do you need something to do? I know I feel like I wish I could do more to help others during this time. Chaplin Mario Delise shared several mission ideas with me. Please be sure to read below for all the opportunities. They are fantastic!

Also, don't miss the vital info on how to join one of our virtual Sabbath schools or our online worship service.

All the Best,

Pastor Nathan

Service Opportunities

Hopeline Call Center – A Christian based call center for those worried and feeling burdened due to COVID-19. Their phone number is 209-533-7991. Hopeline is looking for volunteers to receive phone calls to provide spiritual and emotional support, as well as to point callers to the available resources in our community that can help with a variety of needs. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Cynthia Hallman at  , or Chaplain Mario DeLise at  , 209-536-3238. To read more about this new ministry, click here.

“Need Help, Give Help” – Love Tuolumne County has created an online registry where people in our community can both, ask to receive help due to challenges they are facing due to COVID-19, as well as where a person can go and offer to give help. To learn more, click here. Love Tuolumne County is also partnering with a local Facebook group “TuCo Stronger Together (COVID-19), which you may think about joining as you look for ways to serve our friends and neighbors.

Calling all Seamstresses and Tailors!

  • (Masks) The hospital is working to provide cloth masks to everyone in our county and is asking anyone who is able to help by sewing masks. If you, or your children, would like to help. You can reach out to JoAnn Fabrics who is providing the material, and pattern for the masks. The masks can then be delivered to the Adventist Health Philanthropy Office every weekday, between 1:00-3:00 p.m.
  • (Mask-Extenders) The hospital is working with the community to provide its staff with “mask extenders”, which are plastic or cloth pieces that go on the back of someone’s head and have buttons or hooks for the mask loops to connect onto. Before COVID-19, where staff now need to wear a mask with ear loops all day, no one ever thought about the need for such a product. But now, people are finding the backs of their ears becoming sore and raw, and these mask-extenders are needed to take the pressure off their ears. Attached are some examples, both of the cloth, and the plastic, 3D printer made, “extenders”.

“Thank You” Yard Signs – Adventist Health Sonora has made some yard signs available for anyone who would like to write a “thank you” either to those working extra hard amidst COVID-19 to keep supplies and systems running, as well as for those who are helping the community by staying home and not opening their businesses. The signs are designed to write a note of gratitude, then to be placed in front of the business being thanked. If you would like to pick up a yard sign to say thank you, stop by the church or contact Pastor Nathan.

Interfaith Needs Volunteers – While our church food pantry has been very blessed with volunteer support since the Coronavirus pandemic has begun, not all food banks have been so fortunate. Interfaith Social Services is seeing many community members come in for food, as well as delivering food to the homes of people who cannot safely go into the community at this time. They are looking for volunteer help, Monday – Friday between 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Volunteers need to be over 18 years of age. To volunteer, call Interfaith at (209) 532-0905. If you would like to join Adventist Health Sonora on their volunteer days, they are volunteering on Tuesdays and Fridays. The person at Adventist Health organizing these volunteers is Matthew Rose, who can be reached at 209-536-6672 or by emailing  . Any volunteers are greatly appreciated!

Get Well Cards for Hospital Patients – Would you like something fun to with your family, while letting those in the hospital know we love and care about them? Adventist Health Sonora has given us 50 get well cards to start, that can have a picture drawn on the front, alone with an encouraging note written on the inside. These cards will then be shared with patients inside Adventist Health Sonora. See the attached example of the card template. These are available in the church foyer, or by contacting Pastor Nathan.

Hi,
Are you hanging in there? It has been a rough week for our nation and our world. Sadly, more than twice the number who died on 9/11 have now perished of Covid-19 in New York City alone. Fortunately, so far, Tuolumne County has been spared. I hope and pray we continue to do as well as we have.

A lot of people are hurting--hurting over lost lives, jobs, and moments of life that can never be gotten again. Jesus. Hurts. Too.

About 2000 years ago, on a Tuesday night, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. There he began to feel the full weight of human sin. There he bore the burden of human suffering. He carried our sin and suffering to the cross. There he redeemed it. Through his resurrection on Sunday morning and provided hope to humanity no matter how dark the days are. Can you see it? Can you see it? What, you ask? The light streaming from the empty tomb.

Be Strong, Be Well, Be Faithful,

Pastor Nathan

Dear Friend,

I've been reading the book of Job this week. Considering all that is going on, I thought it was appropriate. I noticed that Job didn't know that Satan was the real cause of his suffering. Amazingly, Job continued to trust God even though he suspected that God might be behind his pain.

We have a distinct advantage over Job. We have seen God in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Cor 4:6). In Jesus, we know that God is for us, not against us (Romans 8:31). We understand that the suffering of this earth was sown by an enemy, not by God (Matthew 13:28). We recognize that the enemy has come to hurt, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). If Job could trust God, even though he sometimes suspected that God might be the source of suffering, how much more should we be able to trust God, who have seen his kindness, tenderness, generosity, and love in the story of Jesus.

Peace, Nathan

Our nation is beginning to feel the effects of the Corvid-19 pandemic. I have several pastoral colleagues who have infected members. I have an infected friend. One of my fellow pastoral has already lost his first member to Corvid-19. Many medical professionals are working at near-maximum capacity to prepare for the difficult coming days. The pandemic is beginning to feel very real. We must always remind ourselves that our hope in Christ is very real and absolutely certain.

I've spoken to several of our members this week who find themselves suddenly unemployed. As you can imagine, this is a very unsettling experience during a very troubling time. If you are without work, we are praying for you. If you are a medical professional who is stretched thin, we are praying for you. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13 NIV11) We will get through these times. Together.

Experts are predicting that we are about three weeks from the peak of the infections in the United States. During the next several weeks we are going to need each other more than we have in the past. Keep me, the office staff, or your parish elder posted with your needs. We will do what we can. I have been amazed by the volunteer spirit of our congregation.

Be Well,
Pastor Nathan

Hi,
It seems that each day brings us more bad news about Corvid 19. The politicians are scrambling to keep the economy from an utter meltdown. The healthcare system is working overtime to prepare for the expected exponential growth of new infections. Stores are working round the clock to keep the basics on the shelves.

How should we react when it seems like the world has gone mad, and the lives we once imagined were somewhat secure, suddenly feel insecure? We must remember that God never promised that our lives would be a fairytale in which nothing bad ever happens. Jesus was forthright about suffering when he said, “in the world you will have tribulation.” (John 16:33) While Jesus frankly acknowledges the reality of trials, he assured us that we are not alone and that we can have peace during tribulation (John 16:31-33). On the cross, Jesus confronted suffering and death, and through his resurrection, he triumphed over them. The cross and resurrection demonstrate God’s unwavering commitment to us and fill us with the assurance of God’s presence now and security for the future. As we have sung so many times at church, "No fear of death, no scheme of man can ever pluck me from his hand." (In Christ Alone)

Jesus said it best when he said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NKJV)

Important Updates:
The Board has established a “Crisis Oversight Committee”. This committee will be responsible for making all strategic decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic. This committee will have the authority to cancel church, Sabbath school, and any other church-related events and to enlist organized help (in cooperation with the church elders) from the church for church members who are struggling to care for themselves or their families.

We will be live-streaming our Sabbath school at 9:30 and our church service at 11 on Facebook and YouTube through April 12.

MLAJA is following the Central California Conference guidelines transitioning to online education through April 12.

If you are sheltering in place and need supplies, please reach out to your church family. You can call the office, pastors Nathan and Tom, or the head elder Tim Trujillo. As I mentioned in the previous email, we are working to bring our parishes back up to speed so that they can care for any needs that arise. We are taking our responsibility to our members very seriously.

Our foodbank is open Wednesdays from 9-12. Many people are in a perilous financial circumstance, and the need for food is only increasing with the staggering layoffs hitting our economy.

I have attached two documents from the Central California Conference that will give you an idea of how the Conference is responding to the Corvid 19 virus.

Courage,
Pastor Nathan Renner

3/16/2020

Good morning.

I don't know about you, but I'm amazed at how fast the world has turned upside down because of the Covid virus. Some have wondered if the restrictions on assembly or travel are the beginning of an end-time plot in fulfillment of Revelation 13. I don't think so. Others are concerned that temporarily transitioning to online only worship services somehow demonstrates a lack of faith. This is not the case.

The sensible public health measures our society is taking are in keeping with Leviticus 13, which outlines a plan of social distancing when threatened with the danger of communicable disease. Romans 13 encourages us to be submissive to the governing authorities. We should be happy to honor them in all things consistent with God's law. Lastly, 1 Corinthians 13 calls on the church to embrace love as its highest ethic. Love is deeply concerned with the wellbeing of their neighbors. By practicing social distancing, we are walking in love. As we face this crisis together, let us remember Leviticus 13, Romans 13, and 1 Corinthians 13.

Updates:

Sabbath School and Church: We hope you were able to live stream Sabbath school and church on Facebook or YouTube last Sabbath. We apologize for the delay in the YouTube feed. We will try to have this issue resolved by this Sabbath. We will be live streaming Sabbath school at 9:30 am until approximately 10:30 am and church at 11 am this coming Sabbath (March 14) as well as March 21 and March 28 (and perhaps longer). Please "join" us this Sabbath! If you missed the live stream service, you can still view Sabbath school and church on our Facebook or YouTube page. If you need help finding those pages, you can contact Pam at 209.532.3337.

Mission Trip: The MLAJA School Board made a very difficult decision on Saturday night to postpone (not cancel) the Peru Mission Trip for the safety of our students, the church and community in Asia, Peru and our local church and community. As it turns out, Peru closed its borders on Sunday afternoon, which confirmed the board's decision. We ask you to pray for God's blessing on all of the students, parents, teachers, and others that were intending on participating in the trip. We also ask you to pray for the church in Asia, Peru, who is now without a church. Jennifer Trujillo is working on rebooking the mission trip for later in the year.

"Physical" Distancing and Social "Closeness": We all now know the importance of practicing social distancing during this pandemic. However, we want to encourage all of you to find new ways to stay socially close (but not physically close) to each other by being purposefully in staying in contact by phone, email, texting, etc.

Parishes: If you need help with anything during this difficult time, please contact the church office or Nathan, Tom, Pam, or Tim directly. As Tim announced on Sabbath, we are going to be reactivating our 12 parishes and assigning an elder to each parish. If you are under 65, you may be contacted by one of our elders to ask for help in responding to needs in your specific parish. More information will be distributed tomorrow.

Austin and Cassia Owen: As Tim informed you on Sabbath, Austin and Cassia Owen and their dear children Gemyline and Elia, are sadly going to be moving to Tennessee next week. Cassia sang special music on Sabbath along with Welby Lo as a special goodbye to you all. Please be sure to reach out to them directly to let them know how much they are going to be missed.

Personal Bible Study and Prayer: These very uncertain times present an excellent opportunity for you to spend more time in personal and family Bible Study and Prayer. I've attached a document to this email with four reading plans to get you started. The YouVersion Bible app is also a fantastic resource.

Church Office: The church office will be closed until March 28, 2020 (and perhaps longer). However, Pam will still be working and answering phones (but not the door). If you are not able to get through to Pam at the church office, please contact Nathan, Tom, Pam, or Tim directly on their cell phones. We are committed to being available to help each of you during these uncertain times.

Giving: We want to ask you to please remember to give your tithe and offerings during the next few weeks. You can give online at discoverlifesonora.org or send you tithe and offerings by mail or drop off them at the church office. Thank you!

God's Closet: Unfortunately, this outreach has been postponed. We will update you as soon as a new date is selected.

Food Bank: Our foodbank is continuing to serve clients from 9-12 on Wednesdays.

Hi,
From an abundance of caution and in consultation with Adventist Health and the Central California Conference Office and in cooperation with the Governor of the State of California, Discover Life Seventh-day Adventist Church will not be holding worship services for the next three weeks.

The pastoral staff and administration of Discover Life realize that many of our members fit the demographic of at-risk people in regards to COVID-19. Because of this, we believe the most loving thing to do is hold our services online for now.

We encourage all our members to take advantage of this time to connect in meaningful ways. Call friends that you know will miss our weekly fellowship the most. Enjoy Sabbath family time. And wash your hands!

Since we will not be collecting offerings for the next three Sabbaths, please remember your local church by giving online at discoverlifesonora.org. Alternatively, you could drop your gifts in the door box at Pam's office, or send your gifts through the mail, marking your intent for each gift.

Pastors will still be on the clock and available via phone or email for appointments and visitation.

Please share word of this with all the folks you may know that do not frequent social media, have access to email, or have limited communication in other ways.

Please join us each Sabbath on Live Stream for services at YouTube or Facebook. Watch for email and social media updates on what services Discover Life will have to offer. These are uncharted waters for Discover Life Church and the Central California Conference. Please keep us all in your prayers as we attempt to navigate well.

The on the house breakfast is canceled as well on Sunday. We are doing our best to keep everyone as healthy as we can.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46

Hi,

Donald Trump promises "big action" on prayer in school. Does this help or hurt the cause of religious liberty? Having a Biblically informed understanding of religious liberty is essential at this moment of history. This Friday night at 6:30 and Sabbath morning at 9:30 and 11:00, we are blessed to have Alan Reinach as a guest speaker for three unique presentations. Mr. Reinach is the Religious Liberty Director for the Pacific Union Conference. He is an attorney who specializes in religious liberty issues. He has successfully fought big business to preserve our religious liberty.

Hope you can make it!

Hi,
Jesus ignited a revolution of service, a serveolution if you will. Discover Life has been taking steps to follow Jesus more fully in the serveolution. I've loved what Discover Life has done with the Life Hope Clinic and God's Closet, but feel God is asking us to make a more significant difference. Can you pray about how God is calling our church to expand its service role? Can you ask God how we can make a bigger difference in our community? Can you ask God what other areas of service he might be calling us to embrace? May God continue to bless us as we continue to love, serve, and lead our community to Jesus.

All the best,
Pastor Nathan

Hi,
I don't know about you, but I'm excited for this weekend. Discover Life has almost 300 volunteers who are ready to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and serve the needs of our community. I love this because Christianity isn't only about ideas and doctrines. It is about God's people being Jesus' hands and feet and serving others. If you haven't signed up to help, give Kristin Lo a call at (760)650-6964, and she will find a place for you. Our training is tonight at 7:00 PM. Also, remember our worship service is Friday evening at 6:30 PM. Hope to see you then!
Courage!

Hi,

Happy Sabbath and happy New Year! I hope that you are blessed in 2020. If you are not a member of our local church and are interested in church membership, I want to invite you to our new member class tomorrow during our fellowship dinner.

Next weekend is the Life Hope Clinic. We will be serving hundreds of our community members. Your volunteer service is much needed and appreciated! We are getting close to having all of the necessary volunteers, but we still need you if you haven't signed up yet. All volunteers need to come to the Life Hope Clinic volunteer meeting on Jan 9 at 7:00 PM.

Because of the Life Hope Clinic, our worship service next week will be at 6:30 PM on Sabbath evening, AKA FRIDAY night. You won't want to miss it.

Good night and God bless. I hope to see you in the morning!

Hi,

I hope you had a merry Christmas! Unfortunately, I have a dear friend who had a tough one. You see, all he wanted for Christmas was for the ministry positions at the Life Hope Clinic to be filled with capable and competent volunteers. Unfortunately, there are still several important positions to be filled. We are only two weeks out from our clinic on January 11 and 12. If you haven't signed up to volunteer, you can do so by clicking here. You don't need to be a medical professional. In fact, if you would prefer to register in person Kristin Lo and Kaye Whitney will be in the lobby this Sabbath. Make sure to connect with them.

I also want to remind you that we close our books on December 31. If you would like to give to the 2019 budget, we need to have received your donation by midnight on January 31. If you would like to give online, you can give through Adventist Giving or PushPay. Adventist Giving has no limit on the size of the gift. PushPay is limited to $9,999.00.

I hope you have a happy new year and may God fill your heart with more joy when grain and new wine abound! (Psalms 4:7)

Hi,

At least five families at Discover Life are counting their blessings this week. Five of our young adults were traveling back to Walla Walla University to finish out the quarter when they hit black ice and rolled their car. Fortunately, no one was hospitalized, and the injuries will likely heal quickly. Thanks be to God! Every moment is a gift, and our only real security is in Jesus.

On a positive note, I'm counting my blessings because I've finished the last of the work for my master's degree. It feels good to be finished.

December and January are going to be exhilarating months for the mission of our church. Thursday, December 12, we have the MLAJA Christmas concert. On Friday, December 13, we will be hosting the Fountainview Christmas concert. These will be wonderful. On Sabbath December 21, we have a beautiful Christmas program planned with brunch between our worship services. You won't want to miss it. Make sure to invite your friends.

On January 11 and 12, we have the Life Hope clinic. During this event, we will serve the dental, vision, and medical needs of our community. To meet the pressing needs of our community, we need everyone to volunteer. Click this link to sign up to serve at this event.

All the best!

Hi,

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are enjoying a carefree day with those you love. On Thanksgiving, I always think about Psalm 65. It is a harvest Psalm and celebrates the generosity of a God who forgives our sin, invites to his house, and provides abundantly for our needs. I hope these words of scripture minister to you as much as they do to me.

All the best!

Pastor Nathan

Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled. You who answer prayer, to you all people will come. When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions. Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple. You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy. You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it. You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. The grasslands of the wilderness overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing.

(Psalms 65:1–13 NIV11)

11/22/19

Hi,

Have you ever heard the saying, "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you?" Becky and I are feeling a little bit like that. Our family had its second car accident in less than a month. They were both rear-end collisions. In both accidents, our car was sitting innocently at a stoplight waiting their turn till wham!  Becky was alone during the second accident. The person who hit her was going about 50 miles per hour. Needless to say, she is sore and we are starting to feel a bit paranoid.

No one is free from trials and Jesus' brother James reminds us that we are to, "Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience." (James 1:2, 3) In spite of our trials, we are still joyful and counting our blessings. God is gracious and Becky is alive and recovering well. For this we are grateful.

With Thanksgiving coming up I hope you are counting your blessings even when facing trials.

Courage!

Pastor Nathan

Hi,

I hope you were able to be at church this past Sabbath. We had over 400 people at our veterans recognition service. Add to that the first service attendance, and we served almost 500 people! Praise God! An event like this requires a large number of volunteers. Some of the volunteers are on the stage like Rey Garcia, Carolyn Smith, and Eden Smith. We also see Melody Trauthwein, Teri Deacon, and Stephanie Whitcomb for working with the students at MLAJA for the music. But behind the scenes, there are countless volunteers working hard. I think of Debbie Curry, Becky Moore, and John Moore working with AV. Also, Pat Gavi and her crew in the kitchen, Donita Osborne and the potluck cleanup crew as well as  Nancy Matthews and her setup/table decoration crew. Where would we be without them? I am thankful for Clyde Reiswig, his team, and the kids at MLAJA for setting up the stage, chairs and tables in the gym. Also a thanks to John Featherstone and his parking attendants. The effort it takes to put on a program like this is beyond just what we see in the final product. They all have to coordinate together to get things done in the right order. This required many of them to work late or at inconvenient times.
Thank you volunteers for your time and effort. I am grateful to be serving at a church that shows their heart for their veterans. Thank you for your service.

Blessings,
Tom Gearing
